What is AI governance for a small product team?

AI governance is the set of responsibilities, decisions, and controls that define how an AI system may be used and changed. A small team can start with use-case ownership, a data boundary, evaluation criteria, and an incident response path instead of creating a policy document nobody can apply.

What does the source say?

NIST’s Generative AI Profile is a voluntary risk-management resource. It offers a framework for considering risks across an AI system’s lifecycle; it is not a certification or a guarantee of legal compliance.

How can you apply this?

Choose one live or proposed AI feature. Name an accountable owner, the people affected, the information it handles, and the actions it may take. Record one unacceptable outcome and the check intended to prevent it. Walk through how someone would report that outcome and who could suspend the feature while investigating.

What should you watch out for?

Do not infer compliance from having a policy or gateway. This guide is operational education, not legal advice; get qualified advice where obligations depend on jurisdiction or use case.
